CHAPTER FOURTEEN | ACE

There were three types of people that Buck didn’t trust: women, the law, and anyone outside of the 1%.

Agent Sienna O’Malley checked all three boxes. In Buck’s eyes, that made her a triple threat.

It was my job to keep people like that far the hell away from the club. I had no business letting someone like Sienna O’Malley get within spitting distance of what we did.

But I hadn’t just let Sienna get close… I had gone and married her, too.

Buck was a good man, and he was generally fair. But he was also the president of the High Rollers, and that meant that he had a duty to put the greater good of the club above all else.

I had jeopardized the entire club by marrying Sienna O’Malley and, for that, I deserved whatever punishment Buck had in store for me. But I had a plan. A plan that could fix everything. I just needed him to hear me out.

I had asked Buck to meet me at the shop, and now we sat side by side at the basement’s bar.

Although Lucky Brake was shuttered as we repaired the damage Mr. Money had caused to the garage, the basement casino was still unofficially open for business. In a few hours we’d be ushering in the nightly crowd of gamblers, but for now, the basement was silent; it was just the two of us.

“What is it you wanted to talk about?” Buck asked, taking a sip from the glass of gin that he had poured himself behind the bar.

I hesitated.

Telling Buck the truth was a life or death gamble, and the odds weren’t exactly in my favor. I had to frame it just right; I had to assure him that I had a plan. I had to make him believe that I could fix this.

I sighed, then I opened my mouth.

Buck didn’t say a word as I spoke. In fact, he didn’t react at all. His face remained blank, and he didn’t flinch besides to take the occasional sip of gin.

Once I had finished, I sat back on my barstool and braced myself for his reaction. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Was Buck going to pull a gun and point it at my head, or was he just going to burst out laughing?

He did neither.

Instead, he frowned thoughtfully and drained the rest of the gin from his glass. Then he pushed himself up off of his stool and walked around to the opposite side of the bar.

“You know I’ve always trusted you, Ace,” he said.

I immediately felt guilt slam into my gut like a sucker-punch. I knew that Buck trusted me, and I knew that I had violated that trust. Badly.

“Do you know why I’ve always trusted you?” he asked.

I shook my head slowly and Buck sighed. He planted his palms on the bar top and leaned forward.

“Do you remember the first time you helped me cut someone loose?” he asked me.

Of course I remembered.

It wasn’t just any someone, either.
